Cut Water Use by 68 Percent and Freed Up His Weekends

Roseville residents Jere and Lako Myers last year participated in the City of Roseville’s highly successful Cash for Grass rebate program. The Myers removed 2,394 square feet of turf from their yard and replaced the lawn with rock, 33 drought-tolerant plants, two low-water trees and a drip irrigation system. For their efforts, Jere and Lako received a $1,000 reimbursement check from Roseville’s Environmental Utilities (EU) and a matching $1,000 check from the state’s turf replacement rebate program.

The Myers have lived in their home for 35 years, and they’d been thinking about removing the turf for several years. “Last year, we decided that in this terrible drought, every drop counts,” recalls Jere. “So we elected to replace our lawn.”

The Myers love how their new yard turned out. “It’s almost ridiculous how little it cost us,” explains Jere. “Our water use is down about 68 percent, which saves us money, and we’re saving an additional $100 per month since we no longer need a gardener to cut the lawn.”

Taking advantage of EU’s water wise rebates while doing their part to stretch Roseville’s shared fresh-water resources, Jere and Lako note that the changes they made were not difficult, and they appreciated EU’s help in achieving their personal goals.
