It is a myth that native plants or “drought tolerant” plants do not need water. They need regular water for the first three to four years before they become established enough to live on little to no supplemental water.

Dry soil is dead soil. No microorganisms survive there. Earth worms leave the area. Keep your soil evenly watered, rather than letting the soil go completely dry. Letting the soil dry out completely causes the soil to become hydrophobic, meaning it will repel water when introduced.
